3 quick tips from Dr. Oz to bring a little self-care to your day

One of my favorite parts of a Monday holiday is getting a chance to relax and catch up on my favorite daytime TV shows.  This morning I caught an old (but awesome) episode of the Rachael Ray show with Dr. Mehmet Oz as the co-host.   As fun and informative as it was to watch Dr. Oz give Rachael a physical, my favorite segment was the Q & A with the audience.  A busy mother of 2 asked Dr. Oz for some tips on how to keep her energy up in order to take care of her many responsibilities.

What I loved most about his answer is that he didn’t give the usual- get more sleep, do less stuff answer.  He didn’t chastise her for taking on too much or give solutions that are not realistic to add to her already jam-packed schedule.  While there is a place for that kind of advice and many women {and men} could benefit from slowing down and doing less- most of us really want help that we can implement NOW.  And that is just what he offered.

Best of all Dr. Oz’s advice encourages the use of senses we often ignore {touch, smell} when it comes to self-care.  Please click the link below to watch a video clip from the show- I can’t possibly do it justice here.  But until you have a few minutes to watch here’s a quick recap…

  • start your day with a splash of ice water- use a body mitt and rub the ice water into your skin.  It is both invigorating and fat-burning at the same time!
  • throughout the day use a simple herb-infused water to relax and increase alertness- get an empty spray bottle and fill with fresh herbs of your choice {he used rosemary but I will try lavender this week} and tap water.  Let steep over night and mist in the air whenever you’re feeling drained or overwhelmed.
  • end your evening with a DIY warm foot massage- fill the foot of a sock {i think knee highs would work best} with uncooked rice, microwave till warm, put your foot in the sock and say “aaaaaaahhhhh!”

Why not you?

As we head into one of the last few weekends of summer it’s nice to reflect on what we’ve done and what else we want to do before the chill of autumn and busy-ness of school begins again.  Mostly I hope that you each have fond summer memories to look back on- lazy afternoons at the pool, cookouts with friends, maybe a family reunion.  But I also want you to look at the things you still want- the changes you had hoped would come this summer that you may not have implemented just yet.  Maybe it was a health goal to eat better or drop those extra pounds.  Maybe it was to work a little harder on your relationship to improve communication and have more fun together.  Or maybe it was to find a new, more fulfilling job or hobby.  Whatever the goal, I want you to ask yourself an important question today.  Why not you?

I love this quote  below from Jillian Michaels because it challenges us to look carefully at the reasons we don’t embrace the successes and happiness that could be ours.  So often we are held back by the unspoken stories we tell ourselves about what we deserve or are capable of.  But the truth is that we all deserve happiness and health and to live our lives with passion and kindness.  So this weekend reflect on this question and on Monday let’s start anew with a new sense of worthiness to achieve whatever it is you want for your life.

Today I want you to ask yourself this one question – “Why not you?”

Why not you to do something for work that you love?

Why not you to have a healthy body?

Why not you to have healthy love?

Why not you to be, have, or do anything you have ever dreamed?!

We are so quick to think others are deserving over ourselves. The truth is that we are all deserving so

WHY NOT YOU?!

Facing Colorado: Coping with community tragdy

Honestly, I’m not sure what to say about the movie theater massacre that happened on Friday in Aurora, Colorado.  I think I had to take a moment to collect my thoughts so that whatever I wrote would make some semblance of sense.  It’s shocking and a reminder that life is fragile and unpredictable.  Can you imagine that a benign activity like going to see the opening of a movie can turn into people running for their lives?  It’s the kind of stuff you see in movies not at the movies!  Memories of Columbine and the Virginia Tech shootings come flooding back in a hurry.  And what you were doing, who you were with, and where you were start becoming vivid.

Mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, boyfriends, the list goes on.  These victims didn’t need to be.  It’s enough to make you feel a host of emotions: frozen, angry, sad, worry, vigilance, protection, appreciation…  Can anything be done or said to help ease the pain and the reality of the loss?  How could someone do such a thing?  How could no one know?  The questions can be endless and don’t seem very helpful.

Additionally, an event like this can propel us to start thinking about the inordinate amount of time spent planning and waiting for something so that we could live the life we want.  I think this event may challenge that.  Time is not guaranteed and we certainly don’t control it.  But we can control/manage how we feel, our decisions and what we do.  It’s so easy to get caught up in the hype of it all and experience a range of sensations from anger to helplessness.  Some of you may even find a new sense of motivation and drive to accomplish things and embrace life.   Even if your response to this tragedy feels unusual to you, in truth all of these emotions can be quite normal, actually.  But as the days and weeks pass, you might find yourself becoming concerned for those around you whose mood shifts and behavior changes.  Maybe you start to notice changes in functioning in various areas of their life like work, home, or even their social life.  Maybe the someone who’s changing is you.  If you or someone else notices this about yourself or someone that they care about, be brave, take a deep breath and step in.

When there is a large scale tragedy we all cope in different ways but there are some things we want you to remember.  Try not to be alone or if that’s what you need let someone know so that they can check in on you.  It’s also okay not to watch or read too many stories about this tragedy as well as talk about it incessantly.   Sometimes doing these very things can skew your perception of what else in going on with you, your loved ones, the country or the world, for that matter.  This is the time for communication and use of the community.  I’m talking about reaching out to friends, family, neighbors, or your church, synagogue, mosque and even professionals, if need be.   Most states have county-based mental health centers that can be searched by computer by looking up ‘community mental health center’ in your state.  Use your resources and support network.  Maintain and manage.  Best of health and well-being to you all.

On behalf of Group Therapy Associates, our hearts go out to the victims and their families.   And our hearts go out to you, our community during this time of grief and shock, it’s important to remember that there are people out here to listen and support you… including those of us here at GTA.

If ever there was a group of people who could use a little more self care in their lives it is moms.  Motherhood is an amazingly rewarding and overwhelmingly demanding job that never stops.  For most women it brings out their desire to care for others and can easily overshadow any ideas of doing things for yourself.  Kids come first and for most moms that means they put themselves last, but without self-care moms can’t be their best.

Join us tonight at 8:30pm EST as we join forces wtih @LetMommySleep, @PWCMoms, @supernovamommy1, @3tinytyrants, and other local mommy bloggers for a twitter chat about the challenges and importance of self care for moms.  We’ll also tap into these great moms for ideas on how to take better care of yourself while still managing to juggle the needs and wants of your family.  Just follow us at @GTAtherapists and follow #SelfCareIsSexy
