Money, marriage, and… the Househusbands of Hollywood

So as confirmation of my point about couples and money earlier this week, last night I watched my first full episode of Househusbands of Hollywood and what was every couple talking about… Money!  Now I am not a big fan of reality TV (for reasons that I’m sure will make it into another blog post) but the dynamics of these couples, all of whom have women as the primary breadwinner, was an excellent example of the variety of ways in which money can be a sticking point for any couple.  Jillian (Barberie) Reynolds and her husband, Grant, were a great example of how even when there is more than enough money to pay the bills, differences in spending habits can quickly escalate into serious conflict.  As they debated the validity of her $8000 shopping trip to Neiman’s, it was easy to see that the issue of money is not just about making ends meet. Family Rituals

Tonight I had dinner with my kids in front of the tv.  I know what you’re thinking…  shouldn’t you, a professional family therapist, know that dinner time at the table is one of the most important ways to stay connected with your children?  Well I do know that; and with the crazy pace that most Northern Virginia families keep I also know that it doesn’t happen as often as it should.   I am, just like many parents in this area, busy and tired most evenings which can make a traditional family dinner very tough.  In spite of the challenges we do have family dinner at the table most nights of the week.    But tonight, we enjoyed a pasta dinner from the comfort of our living room sofa and watched Cash Cab.
