Meet Kristin Hellauer, LCSW
Get to Know More About Kristin…
What’s your name and what do you do around here…
Hello, my name is Kristin Hellauer and I am a licensed clinical social worker. I have 15 years of experience working with individuals, couples and families in a variety of settings.
5 words to describe you…
trustworthy / compassionate / genuine / open-minded / creative
What do you love most about working at GTA…
I was attracted to Group Therapy Associates (GTA) because of the small group practice atmosphere and because I felt strongly about working with other like-minded colleagues who are experienced, compassionate and committed to helping clients live more productive and satisfying lives.
What should clients know about working with you…
I believe that all people have the ability to learn, adapt and grow in positive directions through a good therapeutic relationship. Everyone is capable of psychological resilience. Entering into a partnership with my clients and working together to help them achieve happier and healthier lives, as well as helping them build stronger and more enriching relationships, brings me a deep sense of purpose.
Tweet that (you life story in 140 characters)…
Mother, wife, daughter, sister, friend, mediator, inquisitive, optimist, gardener, chef and nature lover!
If I wasn’t doing this I’d be…
Giving back to my community through volunteer work, taking lots of nature hikes, growing a gigantic vegetable/flower garden and trying out more Mexican and Korean recipes on my family!
The official story…
I went to graduate school at Columbia University in New York City, New York, where I earned my Masters in Social Work degree, and attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, where I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology.
I have worked as a licensed clinical social worker for 15 years in a variety of settings to include private practice, community mental health and as a medical social worker.
Over 5 years ago, I moved to Virginia and I love this area so much that I hope to never leave. I guess that makes me a Virginian at heart! I’ve also had the good fortune to live in other parts of the country to include California, Arizona, New York, New Jersey, Tennessee and Vermont.
I have always enjoyed being a therapist and providing counseling to individuals, couples and families. Some of my areas of professional interest include couples counseling, treatment of anxiety and depression, trauma counseling, grief/loss counseling and helping families cope/thrive when a member has been diagnosed with either a life-limiting medical illness or a serious mental health diagnosis.
