I just need the basics - where are you and how do I get in touch?

We have 2 physical offices and also see therapy and coaching clients virtually via telehealth.  Our offices are by appointment only and all of our scheduling is done by phone and email.

You can reach us at hello@grouptherapyassociates.com  or 703-644-8041.  But the most efficient way to get in touch for an appointment is by completing an Appointment Request Form here.

What ages and types of clients do you work with?

We are proud to have a diverse group of clinicians which allows us to work with a wide range of clients.

Currently, we accept clients starting at age 6 all the way up to whatever age you are! We work with individuals, couples, families, and non-traditional groups of people such as business partners, best friends, and polyamorous relationships.

Our intake process does a good job at assessing your needs and suggesting the ideal clinician on our team.  In the off chance that you are looking for a specialty that we do not have, we are happy to make a referral to one of our colleagues.

How do I figure out which therapist or coach is right for me?

Choosing the perfect therapist for you can feel a little daunting but at GTA we aim to keep things easy.  While it is helpful to know a bit about the different types of therapists and modalities, most of what you need to know comes down to  area of expertise and, most importantly, personal preference.  To help you figure that out we’ve created a quiz.  By answering a few simple questions we can give some insight into the skills and traits your ideal therapist is most likely to have.  Take it now – click here.

In addition to the quiz, we have a well-trained intake team to help match you.  They are great listeners and know our therapists well so they can easily suggest clinicians that are likely to be a good fit.  Submit an appointment request or schedule a phone consultation today.

And sometimes you just know.  Take a look at our staff, read their bios, watch their videos, and see who resonates with you.  Click here to Meet The Team

Wait, what if I'm not even sure if therapy or coaching is right for me?

This is a great question!  Sometimes we know something feels off but we just aren’t sure what we need to move forward.  At GTA we offer two great ways to figure this out.

  1. Start with a phone consultation
    • If you are already here asking the question then it’s likely that therapy is right for you and your just feeling some natural apprehension about starting something new. A phone consultation with our Intake Team can give you clarity about what to expect and peace of mind knowing that someone else is helping you navigate this process. 2. Schedule a Mental Health Check-Up
    • This one-time session is a great way to get a comprehensive assessment of your current well-being and some expert guidance on what to do next.  You will take 4 clinical assessments and then spend an hour with one of our clinicians reviewing your scores, discussing the things on your mind, and determining whether now is the time for therapy, coaching, or something else. How much does a session cost?

It depends… but we are going to make it simple and clear for you. At GTA we offer 3 primary ways to pay for therapy –

  1. Pay as You Go
    • This means you pay out of pocket at each session.  We are happy to provide superbills and connect you with Thrizer, a great company that will help you submit out-of-network claims if you have benefits.
    • Sessions for individuals, couples, or families at $195. Unlike other practices, we do not charge a higher rate for couples or family therapy.
    • Effective January 1, 2025 our rates will increase to $215/ session for Associate clinicians and $250/session for Senior clinicians

  2. Therapy Subscriptions
    • our Wellness Suite Subscriptions offer you amazing value with added support through our online content library. You get a flexible number of therapy sessions at up to 20% off the standard rate plus guided meditations, online courses, digital workbooks, downloadable posters, and much more. Research shows that when you have access to resources outside of sessions you reach your goals faster and find therapy even more valuable.
    • Wellness Suite Therapy Subscriptions range from $245 (1 monthly session) to $900 (6 monthly sessions) depending on how many sessions you select.

  3. Insurance
    • We offer a limited number of appointments for in-network coverage in DC and Virginia.  We currently have clinicians who are in-network with CareFirst and Anthem Healthkeepers Plus (VA Medicaid). Although our Billing department will verify benefits for you, we encourage you to also be fully informed about your benefits prior to your first appointment.

While we do our best to help you in verifying benefits, it is your responsibility to confirm that your insurance pays for your services and if they don’t we will notify you before charging your card on file for any unpaid amount.

If you make changes to your insurance coverage, please let our office staff and your therapist know as soon as possible.  Changes to coverage, even with the same provider, can result in nonpayment by insurance and lead to unexpected bills.  The sooner you inform us, the more effectively we can work with you to ensure payments are paid.

The list of insurances we accept is ever-evolving so please contact our office for the most up-to-date information. We do not offer in-network insurance coverage outside of DC and Virginia at this time.

Why do you only have limited appointments for in-network insurance?

One of the core missions at GTA is to make quality therapy services accessible to as many people as possible. And we are acutely aware that being able to utilize your In-Network benefits is a key way to make therapy affordable.

Unfortunately, private insurance companies continue to make it increasingly difficult for us and most of our colleagues to remain in-network providers.  The financial and administrative hurdles simply do not allow it to be sustainable.

So with that said, we continue to accept some insurance and are judicious in how many appointments are available for each plan.  We will continue to do this as long as we reasonably can.

Our long-term goal is to terminate all of our insurance contracts and roll out options for subsidized self-pay rates using grants, donations, and other innovative ways to reduce costs for our clients with financial limitations while ensuring the livelihood of the clinicians who support you.  As we continue to develop these plans we hope that you will share your ideas and concerns with us. improving mental healthcare accessibility is a community effort and we need your input to make it work!

What are out-of-network benefits and how do I use them to pay for therapy?

Out-of-network benefits is the amount, usually a percentage, that your insurance company will reimburse you when you see a provider who is not in their network.  This coverage can vary widely from plan to plan so it’s important to ask the right questions when talking to your insurance company.  At GTA we do our best to help get accurate information from your insurance company and we are happy to connect you with our favorite OON support company, Thrizer, for even more assistance.

One of our goals is to empower you to talk with your insurance company about your coverage.  As the subscriber paying the premium, we believe you have a right to clear and easily understood information about what and how they cover all of your health care needs.

Below are questions specific to understanding your mental health coverage (often called “behavioral health”) both In-Network and Out-of-Network.

  1. What are my in-network and out-of-network (OON) benefits for outpatient mental health?
  2. Do I have a deductible? When does it apply and what is my deductible amount?
  3. What percentage am I responsible for? Do I pay a copay, co-insurance, or both?
  4. What is the timeline for reimbursement?

How does the Wellness Suite Therapy Subscription work?

It’s really as simple as 1, 2, 3…

  2. Check your email and complete the intake form so we know more about your goals
  3. Our intake team will match you with the right therapist and get you an appointment option within 3-5 business days.

Some key things to remember:

  • Your plan will auto-renew each month.  If you want to pause your plan or cancel at any time it is easy to do right online. Just log in to your account, go to memberships, and click cancel.  If you need help you can email us at hello@grouptherapyassociates.com
  • You can upgrade or downgrade your plan anytime.  Need more sessions during a particularly stressful month? Bump up your plan! Feeling like you are ready to ease into a maintenance schedule? You can opt for 1 session a month or even go down to our Inspired Learner plan to keep access to the content library and get a discount whenever you do need a session or two.
  • There are no prorated refunds of therapy subscriptions. If you don’t use all your sessions, they simply roll over to the next month and are available to you anytime you need them.  Session credits do not expire.
Do you offer special services for specific populations?

We are always looking for ways to offer personalized an innovative care for diverse groups.

Currently, we have special packages for college students and for individuals who are going through a divorce or are newly divorced.

We also offer therapy in ASL for our deaf and hearing-impaired community.

I am interested in working with Esther Boykin

We love our CEO and we tend to be a bit protective of her time.  Esther is a busy busy woman but she does occasionally open her schedule for a new client (usually she will take 2-3 new clients per year).   She also offers executive coaching and weekend intensives.

You can learn more about how to work with her one-on-one here.

If you are interested in having her speak at your event or facilitate a workshop, you can learn more here.

Any other inquiries for her can be sent to this email.
