EricaTurner2014What’s your name and what do you do around here… My name is Erica Turner and I am a Resident in Marriage and Family Therapy and Director of Marketing and Community Relations.  I enjoy working with couples, families, and individuals.

5 words to describe you… Empathetic/goal-oriented/curious/ straightforward/fair-minded

What do you love most about working at GTA… I’m brand new to the GTA team but I think I’m going to really love it here!

What should clients know about working with you… I am inspired each day by the courage I see in clients taking steps to better their lives.  Because clients bring their best to therapy (bravery and trust), I bring my best—compassion, respect, professionalism, an open mind, and a firm nudge here and there. I also think it’s good (therapeutic, in fact), to laugh in the therapy room.

Tweet that (you life story in 140 characters)… Still on the fence about Twitter, but I’m a decidedly old soul who could probably live on good books and thoughtful conversation.

If I wasn’t doing this I’d be… Well, before I was doing this, I was an event planner reading scholarly articles about relationships for fun. I think it’s safe to say that therapy is where I am supposed to be.  Although, if I could find a way to incorporate both fashion and therapy, that would be my dream job.

The official story… I am a graduate of the Marriage and Family Therapy Program of Virginia Tech who appreciates working with relationships of all kinds.  I have often joked that I would meet with couples and families on the street if I were allowed to—that is how I am passionate I am about this work!

I have completed training in Emotionally Focused Therapy, a model of therapy I use to help family members and couples better understand each other, and to exit the cycle of frustration and conflict they have found themselves stuck in.

Also, through my work at an addiction treatment center, I have developed significant experience working with individuals and relationships managing substance abuse, depression, and anxiety.

My key interests are improving couple/family connection; step-parenting and blended families; individuals/relationships dealing with substance abuse, anxiety or depression; adolescents and their parents; and intercultural relationships.
