What do you love most about working at GTA…

Being at GTA is like working with an extended family. I love coming to work, the work that I do and doing it all in a supportive and creative environment with a team of amazing women.

What should clients know about working with you…

I’m easy to talk to and build strong trusting relationships with my clients.  I’m a very active therapist who does my best to tailor the work I do to meet the needs of my clients at any given time.  And I’m very down to earth; always wanting those I work with to feel like therapy is a safe place.

Mom, wife, daughter, friend and therapist who’s getting better with age.

If I wasn’t doing this I’d be…

A professional organizer, but not sure it would be as fulfilling.

The official story…

I’m a Virginia native born and raised in Fairfax.  I majored in psychology in my undergraduate work at Mary Washington University and received a Bachelor of Science in Psychology.  I knew I would go back to school for my Master’s degree but decided to take a year off between my BS and entering my MS program. This year of working in the field was so motivating and helped me to see exactly they kind of  training I wanted in order to gather more clinical skills in order to more effectively help the people I was working with.

The good news is that I had no idea how competitive it was to get into a Master’s program at Virginia Tech or how far the licensing for Marriage and Family therapists (MFT) had to go during that time to be fully accepted across the United States; but I did know that the systems perspective of MFT  fit with my ideas so well. In addition to developing a comprehensive set of clinical skills, I met Esther at Virginia Tech’s Marriage and Family Therapy Program.  We did our residency together and here we are 13 years later continuing to grow as therapists together.

Since earning  my Master of Science degree from Virginia Tech , I have worked in a variety of mental health settings including: psychiatric inpatient hospital, parenting programs, home-based counseling and mentoring , couples groups, and outpatient mental health. I began working exclusively in private practice in 2005.

My areas of interest include: family dynamics, parent-child interaction, women’s issues, mindfulness, mind/ body connections, anxiety , and depression. I work with a wide variety of clients including individuals, families, parents and children over the age of seven. As a Marriage and Family Therapist, I see the therapeutic relationship as essential to change and growth. I work from a systems prospective which helps me focus not only on someone’s internal experience but how that fits into a larger framework of relationships. Through my work, I support each client in meeting their goals while providing a safe and nurturing environment to do so.

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, toy fox terrier and yoga.
