I love fall.  I know that for most people (especially you Virginians) the cooler air and rainy days of fall are nothing to look forward to but for me autumn is the best time of year.  Although the days are shorter, there’s still plenty sunshine and the cool air means I get to wear my favorite sweaters and boots.   It’s also incredibly beautiful outside.. the changing leaves and fresh crisp air are such a welcome break from the humidity of summer. So with my love of fall in mind, here are a couple of local date ideas to get you out and enjoying the beauty of this season of transition!

Movie & a Picnic

Why not visit La Grange winery in Haymarket for a tasty picnic basket and enjoy a movie under the stars tonight?  I know it’s cold but snuggling under a warm blanket will only add to the romance of the evening.  Reservations are required, so be sure to call ahead.

Visit the new MLK Memorial

After Hurricane Irene the dedication ceremony for this new memorial was postponed to October 16 but you can beat the crowds and get a look at the new monument up close.  Located along the tidal basin, it’s in a beautiful location to see DC and not too far from some great restaurants.  If you’re looking to break with the typical movie, dinner combination, this is a great opportunity to visit the history right in your own backyard.

Take a Hike

there’s no better way to enjoy the beauty of fall than out hiking!  Regardless of your fitness level, there are trails in the area with spectacular views that you can enjoy.  Bull Run Mountains Natural Area Preserve offers a relatively easy hike with amazing views of northern virginia and Shenandoah.  Roughly 40 miles from downtown DC, it is easy to get to and incredibly quiet most days.  The perfect spot to escape your busy work week and spend some time alone with your partner.  Be sure to take your camera- you will want to remember this date for  a while.
